History & artifacts

Museum scans, fossils
and works of art.

Museum artifacts, sculptures, fossils and historical objects, including CC0 Smithsonian scans, searched in one place.

This category is a museum you can print. It gathers historical artifacts and cultural objects, sculptures and fine-art scans, fossils and natural history, statues and busts, and architectural and archaeological pieces. Many are scans of real objects, not artists' interpretations.

What you'll find here

Museum-grade, and truly free

The centrepiece here is the Smithsonian Open Access collection. In 2020 the Smithsonian released thousands of 3D models under CC0, the most permissive "no rights reserved" designation there is, meaning you can print, remix and even sell them with no permission and no attribution required. These are museum-quality scans of real artifacts, and almost no maker-focused search tool indexes them. Meshhound does, so a history search here can surface a genuine scanned artifact next to community designs.

CC0 is about as free as it gets, but glance anyway. Licenses can vary item to item even within one archive, and some institutional scans carry trademark or cultural-use notes alongside the copyright status. This isn't legal advice; the original listing shows the specifics, and Meshhound links you straight to it.

Art and sculpture on your printer

Beyond museums, this category is where art lives on Meshhound (it absorbs the art-and-sculpture models). Printed busts of classical sculptures are popular for painting practice and display, and scanned reliefs and statues make striking décor. Detail-heavy scans reward a well-tuned printer and, for the finest pieces, resin.
